Resolutions, Goals, and Staying Positive This Winter
Guest written by Emily Jones, Naturopathic Health Coach.
As the New Year begins, many of us feel a mix of excitement and pressure. Resolutions and goals dominate conversations, and yet, January can be one of the hardest months to stay positive. With shorter days, colder weather, and the festive season behind us, it’s easy to feel a little low, especially as Blue Monday, often called the “most depressing day of the year,” approaches on 20th January.
Let’s shift the narrative and focus on creating realistic, meaningful goals that support your wellbeing and help you navigate winter with positivity.
Setting Gentle Resolutions
Instead of setting grand, overwhelming resolutions, consider these gentle alternatives:
- Focus on habits, not outcomes. Rather than saying, “I want to lose weight,” aim for “I will prioritise nourishing meals and regular movement.” Small, consistent actions lead to sustainable changes.
- Be flexible. Life happens, and it’s okay to adapt your goals as you go. Progress isn’t linear!
- Choose joy. Incorporate activities that genuinely bring you happiness and fulfilment.
Staying Positive in Winter
- Maximise daylight. Start your day by stepping outside or sitting by a window to soak in natural light. It’s one of the simplest ways to lift your mood.
- Stay connected. Reach out to loved ones or join community events. Connection combats loneliness and brings a sense of belonging. Groups like the Sarah Haran Bags of Joy group are a great place to start.
- Move mindfully. Gentle movement, like yoga or stretching, not only warms the body but also calms the mind.
- Embrace rest. Winter is nature’s time to slow down. Give yourself permission to rest and recharge.
Goal-Setting with Self-Compassion
As you think about the year ahead, practice self-compassion. Accept where you are now and set intentions that honour your current circumstances. For example:
- Prioritise sleep and relaxation if you’re feeling burnt out.
- Take small steps towards bigger goals, such as dedicating 10 minutes a day to a passion project or incorporating 2 new recipes each week.
Blue Monday: Reframe the Narrative
Instead of seeing Blue Monday as a day of dread, let’s reclaim it as an opportunity to focus on self-care and community. Here are a few ideas:
- Write down three things you’re grateful for.
- Organise a cosy evening with friends or family.
- Try a new winter recipe or soothing ritual like journaling with herbal tea.
January may be cold and dark, but it’s also a time of reflection and possibility. Let’s celebrate our ability to grow, adapt, and care for ourselves, no matter what the season brings.
